The 2018 Dolomite Products Co., Inc. Penfield Quarry Open House will be held on Saturday, May 5th from 6:45am to 12 noon at 746 Whalen Rd., Penfield, NY 14526.
Please arrive early to sign in and hear the quarry rules and safety talk that will be given at about 6:50am. All ages are welcome - children must be well-supervised and wear a bicycle helmet, safety glasses, and sturdy footwear. Adults must wear a hard hat, safety glasses, and sturdy footwear (steel-toed boots, although not required, are a good idea if you have them).
Everyone Must be out of the quarry or in the upper parking lot outside the office at 12 noon - no stragglers, please. You must stay back 20' from walls & drop-offs at all times, and absolutely no climbing on walls is allowed. Power equipment is permitted, but please be mindful of those around you and warn them before starting equipment.
The quarry has made a special request this year that experienced rockhounds please assist those who are new to the quarry environment and collecting.
Recommended Tools: Rock hammers, chisels (mason's, not woodworking), pry bars, handheld & long-handled sledgehammers to name a few. Gloves, sunscreen, lots of water & fluids, snacks.
Minerals that can be found at this quarry are: Dolomite, Calcite, Fluorite, Gypsum (both selenite and massive), Celestine, Sphalerite, tiny Pyrite crystals (cube, pyritohedron, and octahedral forms), Marcasite needles, Galena, and Sulphur (rare). Although not abundant, Silurian age fossils can also be found, including stromatolites, gastropods (snails), crinioids, brachiopods, and cephalopods.
